 Oakland County was founded in 1818 as a settlement at the junction of the Clinton River and the Saginaw Trail. Named for its gorgeous native oak trees, the county got its economical start via the area’s fertile soil. Agriculture was Oakland’s first lucrative industry, followed by lumber trade once roads and rails were established. Today, the county is inhabited by approximately 1,250,000 residents who have since added the strong local industries of automobile and technology manufacturing and distribution to their economy.
Oakland County is now known as one of the wealthiest counties in the state of Michigan. A blend of city, suburban and rural residential areas coexist in harmony on the 908 square miles of this wonderful county, which is home to a diverse collection of communities, and a large amount of residential development. An exceptional park system provides locals with recreational opportunities ranging from swimming to hiking to tennis, with 6 state recreation areas, 3 state parks and 2 metro parks all within the boundaries of Oakland County.
